A Reason to Smile

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Alhamdulillah! (Praise be to God) I’m a Muslim.

This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.

Quran 5:3

This wasn’t always the case. I grew up Christian, thanks to parents who showed me through their own actions that nothing is more important than loving God. They encouraged me to a lifetime of worship built on the foundations of prayer, faith, and study. The path they started me on, combined with an insatiable curiosity and passion for learning, eventually led me straight to Islam.

It’s a long story, which inshallah (God willing) I will share with you soon.

For today, I’d like to share the reason for this website’s name. It comes from something we know about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

He smiled. A lot.

So much, in fact, that a man named Abdullah ibn (the son of) Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) commented: “I have not seen anyone who smiled more than the Messenger of Allah” (At-Tirmidhi).

It is important to learn from the Prophet’s example, because the two major sources of guidance in Islam are the Quran (the word of God) and the Sunnah (the words and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him). The Quran says the following about the Sunnah:

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.

Quran 33:21

We can learn about the Sunnah from collections of sayings called the Hadith (records kept by the Prophet’s family and close companions). Two well-known examples of sahih (authentic and trustworthy) hadith are Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The Hadith teach us that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) smiled joyfully and often, and that he encouraged us to do the same. Abu Dharr, one of the first Muslims, narrated that the Messenger said “Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity.” (At-Tirmidhi).

As a new Muslim, I’ve found many reasons to smile. The warmth of the community is overwhelming. The Muslim lifestyle (although it took a bit of adjustment) has brought health, joy, and stability into my life. My heart is at peace knowing that even though I am still learning, and making mistakes constantly, Allah is looking after me. And He is the best of Planners.

Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

Quran 13:28

There are many things which I inshallah I would love to share with you soon, but for now, I’d like to just encourage you to smile.

Assalamu alaikum (Peace be upon you)
